You may write an essay or letter (maximum of 500 words, extra points for under 250) or conduct a very brief conversation, or do a piece of art and scan it, or… What does this character, considered fiction by most of the world, mean to you? Send your entry to bees@laurierking.com, and we’ll pick a winner on Sunday (January 17) for a prize of a t-shirt from our Cafepress store or a “Venomous Death” mini-broadside, and post the winning entry on Mutterings the following week. Elizabeth Burden won the guest blog contest. |
| Week Four: Puzzle 1 | The first puzzle of the Twenty Weeks is made up of ten LRK titles and 24 character names, which can be found in any direction: up, down, or diagonal, and written either backwards or forwards. The clues will be posted on Thursday January 21, and the answers on Sunday January 24. A winner will be drawn from the correct answers sent in to bees@laurierking.com. You can scan it or take a photo and send us that, however you like, just so we get your finished puzzle by the end of day on January 24. Click here to see and print off this week’s puzzle, or here to see it with clues. Have fun! |
| Week Five: Newsletter Drawing | A name will be drawn from among those who open the newsletter in the first two days to be our second winner of: an Advanced Reader Copy of The God of the Hive! Here’s where you can sign up for the newsletter and make a try for the ARC. |

| Week Ten: Puzzle 3 | Another puzzling challenge from Our Friend in Connecticut. Some of you have seen a version of this before, but that only makes your life easier, doesn’t it? Send your answer to bees[at]laurierking.com (changing the word “at” to an @ symbol) by Sunday, March 7 and you’ll be entered into a drawing for “A Venomous Death.” Download the puzzle grid and clues over at the Puzzles page, and check back next weekend for the answers! |
| Week Eleven: Sherlockisms | The Sherlockism is a pithy turn of phrase as favored by Mr Sherlock Holmes: “There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.” ”I saw no one.”
”That is what you may expect to see when I follow you.”
Now, you have an opportunity to exercise your own tart pithiness. This year, we’re asking for a Sherlockism that Laurie can slip into the as-yet-without-title novel for 2011. The prizes: an Advanced Reading Copy of The God of the Hive, and your name in the thanks page of the next Russell and Holmes, plus a copy of that hardback when it comes out. Sharpen your pencils and/or your quills, and let us see your brilliance by emailing your submissions to bees@laurierking.com by Sunday the 14th. The winner will be announced on Mutterings probably Monday the 15th, with all of the submissions listed on the Sherlockisms page. |
