Some photos of periodical (17-year) cicadas seen in Morton Arboretum outside Chicago in late May 2007.
John.
P.S. I look forward to seeing them again in 2024!

Wow, John--you could get a gig with National Geographic with that kind of camera-mojo!
Thanks for the pics--that's really cool.

Thanks, vicki! Maybe it will become more than a hobby sometime in the future when I enter my Golden Years!!:)

Gee, thanks, John - not enough I have to listen to them screeching outside my window, now I get to look at them close up and personal? ;)

They are noisy little buggers, aren't they? At least the photos are silent!:)

Those are gorgeous! I was at Gettysburg Battlefield when they were emerging. It was quite interesting...I completely forgot about the battlefield for a long space and sat myself down in the woods and watched...way cool. They are quite loud too....

Thanks, Carlina! When they were at their maximum here there were neighborhoods where the noise was literally almost deafening! You would have to drive down the streets with your windows shut unless you wanted a car full of the critters. Even with the windows up they made quite a racket. Very impressive!

After seeing your photos I quickly read up a few facts and was surprised to find that for the most part they are harmless (unless the noise, driving you crazy, counts)! I thought they were destructive to plants, but I was wrong. Thanks for sharing the photos, which were marvelous.
