Just finding my way around here and not sure where to put this. It's the Guardian interview with Val McDermid in which, among other things she responds to remarks made by Ian Rankin about female crime writers, and puts them into perspective.
I was interested as I had never given a great deal of thought to either Lindsay Gordon's (VM's first detective) or Kate Martinelli's sexuality as an issue in itself. That they are lesbians introduced a range of relationships and networks, just as Miss Marple and Miss Clipstone being spinsters gave them an entry into situations that would be closed to others.
I am not a huge Rankin / Rebus fan, but am quite glad that the two authors are friends!
