It seems that in the aftermath of HP7, J.K. Rowling has turned to crime. Crime fiction, that is. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070819/ap_on_en_ot/people_rowling;_ylt=AilLOPD_FEeMZpPGsW3meras0NUE) :)

J.K. Rowling has been spotted at cafes in Scotland working on a detective novel, a British newspaper reported Saturday.

The Sunday Times newspaper quoted Ian Rankin, a fellow author and neighbor of Rowling's, as saying the creator of the "Harry Potter" books is turning to crime fiction.

"My wife spotted her writing her Edinburgh criminal detective novel," the newspaper, which was available late Saturday, quoted Rankin as telling a reporter at an Edinburgh literary festival.

I wonder if she'll be hitting any future Bouchercons!

Interesting. I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books, they're not really my thing, but if she's as good as everyone says, I might pick up a none-HP book by her.

I'll be interested to see what she does in the crime genre. I wonder if it'll be a standalone or the beginning of a series. Hmmm.

Thanks for the post, vicki! I hadn't heard anything about what JKR's plans were for her next novel; it will be interesting to see what she creates. Like you, I'll be curious to see whether she does a stand-alone, or whether she dreams up another serial character. Go, JKR!

Another JKR series would be cool. I wonder if it'll be a YA or at least YA-friendly. It's weird to think that she's still got most of her writing career ahead of her!

How exciting is that, though!!:)

I knew she had it in her. All the HP books are mysteries with a little added magic really...expeliarmus here....cruciarto there...adavara cadarva (or however you spell it) up there. Doesn't surprise me she's turned to crime fiction. Voldemort was practically a deranged serial killer with several shared commonalties found in serial killers....

So Voldemort is the serial killer and Harry is the good detective trying to find all the clue to be sure he's nailed his killer and then he must find the means to stop him. Think about it. Don't all the HP books follow this scheme...all the way back to the Philosopher's Stone..WOW! I just realised, that is bloody brilliant!

That really is true. There is a strong mystery element in the series. Of course, most of the best stories seem to have a little mystery in them, in one form or another.

Unfortunately, just the other day I read that Mr. Rankin was joking!

I hope she sticks to writing children's books, one-offs this time, Jo!!
