I just watched this 10 minute video of ACD discussing Holmes and psychical research. I thought a few here might be interested:

Thank you, Elizabeth; what an interesting video! I found especially interesting ACD's comments about folks believing that Holmes was real, and a woman who wrote offering her services as housekeeper, after hearing about Holmes interest in beekeeping, as she was experienced "on the segregation of the queen" !!! Of course, ACD's interest in psychic phenomena tales him in an entirely different direction, but that's another story!

What a terrific film clip! Most everything in it is stuff I've heard about ACD before, but it's so delightful to see him and hear him say these things in his own voice (I also like that he has his dog with him). I sent this thread url to LRK to make sure she has a chance to see the clip if she has a few minutes between Touchstone page proofs. The deadline approacheth... :)

You are all very welcome! I'm happy to be of service. :) He came across completely differently from what I had imagined and was I pleasantly surprised.

Did anyone notice how Sir Conan Doyle mentions that a woman wrote a letter to Sherlock Holmes, and that she was an expert at 'segregating the queen'?!? Does LRK know about this?

Wasn't that cool?! I emailed LRK about the video, but she was not only out of town but also in page-proof hell at the time, so she may not have been able to get to it right then. I imagine she'll look at it after she does the post-trip/post-page-proof catching up. :)

I just watched the clip. Thank you to the person who recommended it. It was fascinating to hear him talking about Holmes and Watson, and to hear his absolute belief in spiritualism. I'm sure it gave him comfort.
