I simply cannot stop reading a book if the main characters are in peril. I cannot leave them there.

I guess you really might as well just read while you're stuck down in the basement with the weather radio. That's why you need a good reading light and a pile of batteries amongst the emergency supplies! Having been right under a tornado, however, I'll have to say that it would take a mighty good book to keep somebody reading through the actual chaos and racket of it passing overhead (imagine a freight train running just over your head and rattling the whole house, and you'd be close). Sceery.
