Publisher's Weekly has all the news (http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6522362.html?nid=2286&source=title&rid=736178266) on the children's literature awards announced this morning at the American Library Association conference in Philly!

I like the fact that this is the second Newbery in a row won by a librarian. Good news for all those librarians who are writing fiction in their spare time--pretty cool!

Ahhh, this brought back memories. When my son (now 27) was in elementary school I fulfilled my lifelong desire to be a librarian by running the PTA library at his school. Each year we couldn't wait to see what the new Caldecott and Newbery would be and then would try to figure how, with our meager budget, we could obtain copies for our library.

Some of my fondest memories of that time in my life surround my reading to the kindergarten classes each week. I selfishly kept them for myself and scheduled other volunteers to the the first and second grade classes.
