Well, I'm one for many different discussions at the same time, so why not a discussion of our favorite movies while we're discussing favorites?

I'm a bit of an old movie fan; black and whites are classics for a reason!

Here we go!

Black and Whites: "Aww...this is one of those days that the pages of history teaches us are best spent lying in bed."
Casablanca
The Philadelphia Story
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Harvey (I'm a huuuge Jimmy Stewart fan!)
It's a Wonderful Life
You Can't Take It With You
Dr. Strangelove
It Happened One Night
Citizen Kane
Some Like It Hot
To Kill A Mockingbird (Gregory Peck is a perfect Atticus!)
To Have and Have Not
His Girl Friday
To Catch a Thief

Older Colors: "Germany has declared war on the Jones boys."
North By Northwest
Lawrence of Arabia
Tootsie
The Indiana Jones movies (I grew up on those films)
The Pink Panther movies
Sabrina (the Harrison Ford version is beautiful)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (I'm not a Western fan, but I did enjoy this one!)
Rear Window

Musicals: "Don't tell me not to fly, I've simply got to. If someone takes a spill it's me and not you. Who told you you're allowed to rain on my parade?"
42nd Street
Gigi
My Fair Lady
Guys and Dolls
West Side Story
Holiday Inn
Singin' in the Rain
Chicago (oh the guilty pleasures of that movie!)
Mary Poppins (childhood favorite)
Funny Girl

The Last Ten Years (give or take):
Notting Hill
The Truman Show
Garden State
Little Miss Sunshine
Fight Club
Gladiator
Catch Me If You Can
Forrest Gump
The Shawshank Redemption

There are many, many more, but these are the ones off the top of my head. Have fun!

BRIEF ENCOUNTER - THE BEST FILM EVER MADE - EVER
Breakfast at Tiffany's - I love it!! Audrey Hepburn is sooo gorgeous
Anything with Fred and Ginger in it - especially Shall We Dance
Also Arsenic and Old Lace - Cary Grant is extremely funny in this :)

alina and AmyLizzie - When I saw your posts earlier today at work you completely got my mind off track as I started thinking about years of movies! At 55 years young I have too many favorites to list, so I'll stick to some that come to mind from the last decade or so:

Love Actually
A Beautiful Mind
The Queen
House of Flying Daggers
Forrest Gump
The English Patient
Schindler's List
Finding Neverland
Gosford Park (w/ the incomparable Steven Fry)
Chocolat
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Apollo 13
L.A Confidential
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Ray
The Sixth Sense
Erin Brockovich
The Hours
Notes On A Scandal
and, of course, all three Lord of the Rings movies!!!

I recommend them all!! :)

John.

Breakfast at Tiffany's - I love it!! Audrey Hepburn is sooo gorgeous

Goodness; I can't believe I left out that movie! And Audrey Hepburn is one of the most amazing, beautiful, and talented actors ever! My parents actually danced to "Moon River" at their wedding. I play it on the piano and sing it to them every anniversary. And usually they get all lovey-dovey and emotional and I just keep on playing the piano waiting for them to say something so I can leave them to their reminiscing.

I can't believe there are soooo many movies I did not add to my list! Yay for all of these beautiful movies!

And a movie I just thought of:
What Dreams May Come (one of the most aesthetically pleasing movies to watch; you just can't tear your eyes away from it!)

Which leads me to:
Patch Adams
Dead Poets Society
Richard III (the 1995 version with Ian McKellen)
Much Ado About Nothing (I love Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson)
Stranger Than Fiction

And thus is a word association game based on movies right there. Beautiful!

First, I should mention that Star Wars has a special place in my movie-going heart, although I can't really tell you why, exactly. I remember sitting in the theater as an 11yo, eyes wide as saucers and thinking, “my life will never be the same again.” I was thunderstruck and gobstopped in a way I rarely have been since. And indeed, in some part of my brain, I still divide my life into the “pre-Star Wars” and “post-Star Wars” periods. So it still comes first, and I add The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi in there by association. I prefer not to focus too sharply on the more recently released prequels, however. Too many shoulda-beens/coulda-beens.

Okay, the list:

The Philadelphia Story
His Girl Friday
Casablanca
Some Like it Hot
High Noon
Arsenic and Old Lace
Gone with the Wind
Rear Window
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
To Kill a Mockingbird
Psycho
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Last Picture Show
Radio Days
Hope and Glory
A Christmas Story
It’s a Wonderful Life
The Princess Bride
Singin’ in the Rain
The Wizard of Oz
Mary Poppins
Grease
Meet Me in St. Louis
Star Wars. Episodes 4, 5 and 6
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Back to the Future
Superman 2
Titanic
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
Toy Story
Fantasia
The Iron Giant
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Labyrinth
Elf
Beetlejuice
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Ghostbusters
A Fish Called Wanda
Raising Arizona
Legally Blonde
When Harry Met Sally
Groundhog Day
Pleasantville
Shakespeare in Love
Moonstruck
Parenthood
Peggy Sue Got Married
Broadcast News
Midnight Run
Clerks
Room With a View
Amadeus
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Running on Empty
Stand By Me
Pulp Fiction
Five Easy Pieces
Goldfinger
Die Hard
The Matrix
The Fugitive
The Terminator
T2
The Road Warrior
The Sixth Sense
Rosemary’s Baby
Body Heat
Old School (I know, I know, but Will Ferrell's streaking scene almost gave me a hernia)

hmmm...

I don't have that many movies, so I'm going to list what I have then what I wish I could get...

Have:
Lord of the Rings (extended versions)
Network
Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth"
Monty Python's Flying Circus (vol 1-12)
Best in Show
Office Space
Gosford Park
The Usual Suspects
Better Off Dead

Wish I had:
Star Wars, all of them (original edits and remastered re-releases)
The Avengers (British TV series but only the years with Diana Rigg)
The Prisoner (British TV series, all of them)
Cradle Will Rock (Tim Robbins' masterpiece!)
All Monty Python movies
All Terry Gilliam movies
Clue (I still get lines from that one in my head)
Anything with Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Fred Astaire, or Gene Kelly
All the Bond movies (except the stinky ones post-Moore and pre-Casino Royale, and "Thunderball" 'cos I hated that one)

***There's this one movie that has stuck in my head that I saw once and WOULD NEVER WATCH AGAIN because it's rather deep and traumatic but I can't imagine not having it in my experience of this life. I would recommend renting it - "Dogville" - if you can handle things that show human nature as rough and raw as it can be.***

Spiston, you made my day! I haven't watched Clue in ages! That used to be my favorite movie back in 7th grade; I watched it three times in a row, each with a different ending. Oh the good old days...

Just had to say that; such great memories!

"Life after death is as improbable as sex after marriage!"

Good Grief you people make me jealous, I own very few movies and in the last decade have had very little time to watch any. We purposely got rid of the TV for the last three years because of many reasons, first and foremost was as an experiment to test the theory of the addictiveness of television (confirmed!) Yes, I know that doesn't mean you cannot have a TV/DVD set up for movies, we just didn't get around to it. We are currently in a temporary, seasonal log cabin on a high mesa (long story) that has a HUGE TV and DishNetwork, so I have been indulging a bit.

There have been two movies in the last few years that I find myself watching over and over:

Last Samurai (For music, images, story.... well, just EVERYTHING, and I am not all that fond of Tom Cruise but I gotta say he did a great job in this one!)

Kinky Boots (for the music, mainly, and then the story)

This is a great thread....

My faves are:

John Wayne westerns (grew up watching them with my Dad)
The Quiet Man
Star Wars (original 3)
Harry Potter
Houseboat (with Cary Grant and Sophia Loren)
Stranger Than Fiction (Emma Thompson was awesome!)
Fools Rush In
The Princess Bride
Three Musketeers (with Oliver Platt)
The Departed
Godfather (except 3, 3 was creepy)
The Brother Cadfael movies from PBS (the books are great too-- by Ellis Peters)
Emma
Pretty Woman
Officer and a Gentleman
Sense and Sensibility (again Emma Thompson)
Love Actually
Music and Lyrics
Because I Said So (Diane Keaton, need I say more)
Something's Gotta Give
The Body (Antonio Banderas is a priest)
DaVinci Code

Ok, I guess I'll stop now. I hope you guys watch some of these because I will be watching some of yours!
Cheers!
:)

Derek Jacobi (as Brother Cadfael) is the best! The movies are available on VHS and DVD and are terrific! Glad you pointed them out, I'm sure many of our forum members would enjoy them a lot! Great list!

Oh I made a mistake in an earlier post. I said that if I had the James Bond movies I wouldn't want Thunderball 'cos it was stinky. I liked Thunderball. I was thinking about that dumb space Moore/Jaws crap, Moonraker.

It was going to keep me up all night unless I posted. :)

Also, yeah, Hitchcock, I almost forgot. I'd like all of them too. Thanks for the reminder.

Oh yeah, and Alina, about CLUE, "I hated her so... much... it... it... the... it... the... fee... flames... flames... on the side of my face... heaving... breathless... heaving breaths..." That's the line that always got me.

I loved seeing the lists!

Due to the amount of moving I've done, I don't have all my favs in the movie cabinet at the moment (12 Angry Men, for example!). Here's what I do own:

- Benny and Joon
- A baker's dozen of Sherlock Holmes movies
- A Fish Called Wanda
- The BBC's Chronicles of Narnia
- Blackpool
- Casanova
- Pirates of the Caribbean II
- Phantom of the Opera
- Once Upon a Time in Mexico
- A Day Without a Mexican
- Monty Python boxed set
- Stargate SG-1 seasons 1-3

Now, if I had all the ones I love? Casablanca, for sure, Princess Bride, Clue, all the new Doctor Who seasons, and the list goes on!

Oh trust me, dear Peppermint, many of the movies I put on my list I've only seen, never owned! Oh if only...

Oh, and a few more to add for me:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: My dad and I watched it on a "date;" I'm now hooked, even if it is a western. Newman and Redford make a great team! "Who are those guys?"

The Sting: Another dad-influenced movie; Newman and Redford again. This time set in the 1930's a la Ocean's Eleven. Great fun!

And pretty much anything with Jimmy Stewart.

Two of the great movies of all time! The repartee between Newman and Redford is priceless:

Sundance Kid: One hell of a time to tell me.

and

Butch Cassidy: Then you jump first.
Sundance Kid: No, I said.
Butch Cassidy: What's the matter with you?
Sundance Kid: I can't swim.
Butch Cassidy: Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you.

also

Henry Gondorff: Glad to meet you, kid, you're a real horse's ass. Is Lonnegan after you too?
Johnny Hooker: I dunno... I ain't seen anybody.
Henry Gondorff: You never do, kid.

Good stuff!

Ooh, I love both Buffy and Farscape and own both series on DVD! (I was also part of the internet campaign to "Save Farscape" which resulted in the mini-series "The Peacekeeper Wars".) Other TV series I own and re watch are:

~ Angel
~ Firefly (and the subsequent movie "Serenity")
~ The X-Files
~ The Gilmore Girls

My 82 year-old mother lives with us and is a big fan of British comedies and spy shows. So we have been netflixing (is that officially a verb yet?) and watching:

~ The Irish RM
~ Bless Me Father
~ The Sandbaggers

Other series I have watched via netflix and enjoyed are:

~ Sex and the City
~ Six Feet Under

Hey jtb! Thanks for the quotes; they made me laugh and will probably make my dad laugh when I introduce them into conversation! ;) Newman and Redford have an amazing chemistry between them; I wonder why they never made any more movies together...they should have!

And I wonder how much I've missed in TV after swearing not to watch for five years about six years ago...the only thing I've watched lately is The Office; a college friend got me hooked one night after along interval of studying for my Plant Bio final. Oy, that was a loooong night!

And I wonder how much I've missed in TV after swearing not to watch for five years about six years ago...

I did the same thing years ago after tiring of the plethora of vapid programming available until my daughters got me hooked on a few shows a couple years ago, and now they are must-see tv for me, namely LOST, Bones, and House,m.d., starring the supremely talented Hugh Laurie (who BBC watchers enjoyed in his younger days in Blackadder, and as Bertie Wooster in Jeeves and Wooster with the irrepressible Stephen Fry as Jeeves!!) Nonetheless, my precious reading time takes priority, and my favorite shows have to play second-fiddle!:p

Just finished re-watching the 6-tape BBC version of "Pride and Prejudice." And BTW, Darcy makes even more sense if you consider him as shy and not at ease in large gatherings than if you consider him as haughty and arrogant. The latter comes from his wealth and his good looks; the former - remember, he's country-bred just like any of the other characters.

I spent a good portion of today discussing books and movies with some of my relatives at our annual 4th of July cookout. I remembered another movie that I fell in love with when I saw it on DVD last year and have shared with numerous people, "Secondhand Lions" with Robert Duvall and Michael Caine. Their characters sort of remind me of Mahmoud and Ali out of "O Jerusalem" and "Justice Hall". :D

alina

Oh, I remember that movie! Absolutely adored it, especially since the entire family could watch without worrying about covering the little ones' eyes! Duvall and Caine are great actors. I have a special place in my heart for Michael Caine; he made a great Scrooge in A Muppet Christmas Carol (and yes, the Muppets did A Christmas Carol) and sang even! Lovely little piece of work, that!

Absolutely! A less-serious but still wonderful Michael Caine movie is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels -- he and Steve Martin make a great comedic pair.

Indeed, I will definitely look up those movies John!

And as for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, I loved the movie version; Caine and Martin are wonderful together, just serious enough to pull of the absurdity! Still have yet to go see the musical, though I did listen to the soundtrack and started cracking up! (I'm a bit of a musical obsessor, so don't mind if I reference them from time to time.)

That's one I still have to watch--I'm almost afraid I'll laugh too hard! I don't have any time for all these movies...guess I'll have to postpone something I normally do...

I just watched Benny and Joon at my friend's suggestion (ie--constant plaguing for three months). I was just reminded of how much I admire Johnny Depp's versatility as an actor! I love Sam so much and his love of old films, especially his love of dear Charlie! It warmed the cookies of my heart!

Another wonderful Michael Caine movie is The Quiet American with Brendan Frasier (who is actually a wonderful actor. Go figure). I also enjoyed him in The Prestige and I have a soft spot for him in Miss Congeniality. It's not the best movie in the world, but it is entertaining.

Do tell me if you share a favorite with me!

Actually about 90% coincides with my list, which is interesting given the disparage in our ages. Must be the similar interests.

I would add to your list "Shadowlands" a small movie that I recently watched after not seeing it for years, and was blown away by the power of Edward Hardwicke's performance as Warnie, CS Lewis's brother. He endowed the character with such humanity and held his own against the powerful presence of Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger, two giants on the screen.

I'm fond of old black and white films also, particularly those of Bette Davis. "Mrs. Skeffington" "Now Voyager" and "Jezebel" are some of my favorites.

I pretty much share most of your favorite movies with you except for the ones I have yet to see. I love the musical movie as well!

And have you watched any other Bogart movies other than Casablanca? To Have and Have Not is one of my favorites of that times, with Lauren Bacall, his future wife. Lovely piece with a classic line in it!

And if you like black and whites in general, I suggest to you The Philadelphia Story and any others by Stewart, Hepburn, and Grant. (Vicki will agree with me on the movie recommendation, I'm sure.)

Happy movie hunting!

I have indeed! One of my favorite movies, The Adventure of the Sierra Madre, features Bogie as the villian. He was, of course, the villian in a number of films, especially ones that featured gangsters. But, I have not yet see To Have and Have Not. Lauren Bacall... didn't he meet her on the set of the movie? Which film was that?

Do tell me if you share a favorite with me!

First of all, welcome to a fellow cycling enthusiast, and to someone from my wife's hometown of Columbus (my in-laws currently live in Gahanna). I certainly share some of your faves, particularly The Shawshank Redemption (Morgan Freeman is always great), A Beautiful Mind (anyone who liked the movie should read the book by Sylvia Nasar), and, of course, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (I've been a big fan of the Pythons ever since their original tv series; Terry Gilliam is the best!), also Breakfast at Tiffany's (Audrey Hepburn was always stunning!). Thanks for sharing the great list!

John.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, one I don't remember seeing(although there were so many listed!)

Summer Stock -Judy Garland, Gene Kelley As a bonus it had the very first short Judy was in on the VHS.

Neverwhere- Not only is it a book by Neil Gaimon but before he wrote the book he was engaged to write the screen play. It is a fantastic dvd set for those who like fantasy that requires thought and there are some excellent actors in it although there was one I didn't like that much, but I may have been prejudiced by the book. The book was written later to expand on the miniseries and there have been hints that eventually Neil Gaimon might possibly write more about the characters featured in this story.

I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan but I didn't realize that the BBC did a mini-series of Neverwhere; thanks for the info, Kiyomi! I will have to look for the dvd set; IMDB gave the series a good review. Thanks, again!

Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. I got to go to a book signing for Anansi Boys when it first came out. They've just made Stardust into a movie. I believe in opens in August. If you haven't seen it, he has a website, www.neilgaiman.com, complete with blog.

Yep. I have not listened to it myself yet, but there's an interview with JMS about it up at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/blog/post/PLNK2JBWHQ3VZ5T39

Oooh--Gaslight is so creepy! Also love Notorious, Gone With the Wind, To Catch a Thief and a lot of those great oldies.

I haven't seen Catch Me If You Can or anything recent of Spielberg's. I need to catch up on his movies. One I've recently enjoyed is Stranger than Fiction--it's excellent and very thoughtful--Will Ferrell did a great job with a straight role, after so many wild and wacky characters. I love a lot of his goofy stuff, but I didn't much like Anchorman, which I saw on DVD last week. It just wasn't that funny. I did enjoy the more recent Talledega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which he made with the same team. One of my favorite lines: a doctor says that Ricky Bobby's paralysis is psychosomatic, and his best friend says "you mean he can start a fire with his mind?" Hehehehe!

Has anyone seen Shaun of the Dead? I liked that one. I also just saw Hot Fuzz, which was made by the same guys. Both of those are really funny, in twisted sort of way.

I have too many. I could probably have paid off my student loans long ago between my library and video collection (at least that's what my parents tell me, usually when they're helping me lug boxes into a new apartment) but I figure you've got to keep your priorities straight. Here are just a few of my collection:

The Whole Wide World-- on my top 10 movie kisses list
Practical Magic-- also on my top 10 movie kisses list
Gosford Park-- also on my top 10 movie kisses list
The Long Hot Summer-- Paul Newman- whooeee!!!
Chocolate-- My favorite Johnny Depp character of all time
Don Juan Dimarco-- for obvious reasons
Firefly the series-- hilarious and bittersweet
Second Sight-- Seasons One and Two, my first encounter with Clive Owens
THANK YOU BBC Mysteries
Harry Potter Library
The Original Star Wars Trilogy
10 Things I HAte About You
Dirty Dancing-- I'm showing my generation here

and the list goes on, but these are the most frequently watched while doing laundry.

Speaking of the Star Wars trilogy - original and latest - someone on another forum posted an old wisecrack about a terrorist demanding several things and "An end to Star Wars." To which the comic says "I agree. Three movies was enough."

HAH:p But seriously, they aren't doing another one are they? They ARE doing another Indiana Jones, which I will reserve judgment on. I was glad to see Miriam's character make a return. Of all the damsel's she was the least in distress and most likely to kick Indy's smug tail, whenever he needed it. (And what a tail was, if you'll forgive me for being sexist for a moment.)

Smurrey, thanks for your list--there are several movies there that I'll be adding to my "to see" list!

they aren't doing another one are they?

Lucas originally envisioned three trilogies, with the last to be filmed showing Luke, Leia and Han as older characters, rebuilding the Republic. But doing the prequel trilogy wore him out so badly that he decided to ax plans for the last trilogy. Given the quality of the prequel trilogy, I'm not to broken up about that decision.

As male gorgeousness goes, it just doesn't get much better than HF in the first Indiana Jones movie, imho. Karen Allen was definitely my favorite of the IJ love interests. The third one wasn't horrible, although she looked like she needed to be tied to a chair and force-fed doughnuts until she gained 15 pounds. (And the poor girl's last name was Doody--why on earth didn't she get a stage name?)

But I hated, hated, and I do mean hated Kate Capshaw and her stupid character in the second movie. I'd rather watch five Benny Hill marathons in a row than have to listen to another minute of her obnoxious squealing and whining. Gad! I've never watched that movie more than once, primarily because of her (although I didn't like the movie as a whole, either--third one was much better). When the second one was released, I remember Spielberg raving on and on about what a comedic genius Kate Capshaw was, and how he was just bowled over by her audition. Surprise, surprise--he married her not long afterward, so I somehow doubt his rational brain was online during the audition. But to be fair, the character was written in such an irritating way, even a real comedic genius would have probably bombed in it. </rant>

Sorry--I've evidently been bottling-up a bit about that second movie. Feeling much better now. :)

Well....I did wonder why Buffy never realized just how great Giles was...

Quote from another thread, but it reminded me that I have started watching the Buffy series on DVD, just starting season 2. Very campy, but immensely entertaining. DVD's of past TV series are the last thing I need in my always-strapped-for-time life!!!

I have no idea how I missed this thread, but I did so I'm posting now;)

The Animation Shelf (quite a few here; my best friend is a grad student in animation):
Princess Mononoke
Castle in the Sky
Howl's Moving Castle
Mulan
The Incredibles
Finding Nemo
Ratatouille
Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King
The Iron Giant
Robin Hood
Avatar: The Last Airbender (My most recent obsession;) Why, oh why won't they air the last 10 episodes??? An entirely amazing story, if you haven't watched the series.)

My "classics" :
Star Wars (the original 3)
Indiana Jones (I really, really want to upgrade to DVD on these)
Ten Things I Hate About You (aka the 90s version of Taming of the Shrew;))
The Goonies
Fried Green Tomatoes
Batteries Not Included (and I just recently discovered that Jessica Tandy was the lead in The Birds; she was too cool:))
Babes in Toyland (the version with Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves from 1986, which I've since realized is crap, but I watched every day for a year when I was 6 and wore through two VHS tapes...my poor mother...)

More Recent Faves:
Battlestar Galactica (seasons 1&2, and season 3 is out tomorrow! Hoorah!)
Jane Eyre (BBC 2006, and I didn't even like the story before seeing this version, Ruth Wilson is the perfect Jane)
Pride and Prejudice (BBC w/ Colin Firth)
Dead Like Me (first season was hi-larious, second season...I can see why it didn't make it to a third, frankly)
The Harry Potter series
Stranger than Fiction
Love Actually
Firefly/Serenity
Pan's Labyrinth (so so good, but I can't bring myself to watch again because it was so depressing)
Iron Jawed Angels (don't actually own this one yet, but it's on my wishlist)

There are more of course (we go through at least a movie a week at my apartment through Netflix and I'd say a good 1/10 of those end up on the shelf later), but I'll stop there;)

If you haven't seen Iron Jawed Angels, definitely check it out. It's about suffrage in the US round about 1912-1920, looking specifically at Alice Paul (played by Hilary Swank who is amazing) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor, also amazing) and their more radical contributions to the women's rights movement. Kind of fits pretty well as a US counterpoint to our recent discussion book by Vera Brittain, actually.

I'm not terribly broken up about it either. Although, having read quite a lot of the story as it continued in novel from presented by other (dare I say more capable?) writers than Lucas, the last trilogy probably would have been much better than the prequels:p

Seeing as they haven't yet aired those eps yet (in the US anyway...the canadian releases are all over the web at the moment), I have no idea what they are going to put on the vol 3 DVD...;)
