FYI--there's an excellent interview with LRK on the Poe's Deadly Daughters mystery blog (http://poesdeadlydaughters.blogspot.com/), which LRK linked on her own blog today, in case you haven't seen it. Just scroll down on the PDD blog to June 7.

LRK's comments about the upcoming "Touchstone" were interesting; her publisher being smitten w/ some of the characters in it, and wanting to have more books w/ them, tantalizes. A period political tale sounds promising! Can't wait!

I know. It sounds like it's going to be a great book, and another LRK series would be terrific, but I think we're going to have to clone her or give her one of those time-turners from Hogwarts. That's a lot of stories and characters to keep moving!

tee-hee. you said time-turners. and hogwarts.
july is going to be a good month, no?

i can't wait for more LRK books and series, as well. for sure the letdown after Locked Rooms wanting more, feeling so many things...geez by the time the book club gets to that one, we'll all know each other pretty well.

might have to have a convention. :)

(That said, the novels Folly and Keeping Watch aren’t purely standalones, although neither are they sequels. They have small areas where the stories overlap, and eventually I plan two or three more, all separate novels with small areas of overlap. I think of it as the San Juan Cycle.)

And these I just can't wait for; both Folly and Keeping Watch were most engaging, and it will be fun to see what LRK has in store for her characters!!

might have to have a convention.

LRK lovers unite!!! :)

Hehehehehe! Have you ordered your copy of HPVII yet? I can't wait to get it, but it's going to be a bummer in the sense that it's the last one. Way bittersweet. Makes me wonder what JKR will come up with next. Harry is going to be a hard act to follow.

You know, we sort of have a loose schedule for the VBC monthly discussions--and it goes quite a way out, so you're right. We'll probably be finishing each other's sentences by then!

might have to have a convention.

LRK lovers unite!!! :)

RL get-togethers of online groups always have an air of expectancy and suspense, as we all see how the online voices match up with RL voices and personas. Sometimes people are just exactly as you picture them in your mind, and sometimes they are so different, it's mind-boggling. I remember reading a columnist--I think he was in one of the SF papers--talking about meeting with a group from the Well. One of his online friends, whose online voice was strong, contemporary and dynamic, turned out to be a feeble 90yo. It weirded the columnist out so bad, he had to go sit in a toilet stall for a few minutes to regather his shattered wits. I've never encountered that much of an incongruity between online and RL personas, but I've seen enough of it to understand to some extent how he felt.

I think it would be cool if we could have some sort of VBC get-together at various mystery conventions or LRK events. Bouchercon would be a fun one, and the locations are all over the place. This one is in Anchorage, so my thin-blooded self would probably have to pass on that one, even if I could get funding for it (2008 is in Baltimore, 2009 in Indianapolis, btw). The Edgars are a possiblity--I'm always up for a jaunt to the Big Apple (and Southwest makes it somewhat affordable--yay!). And in most years, there are LRK tours and events, so those are possibilities, too.

Getting together would be a blast -- we just need a schedule of events to start with . . . anyone???

There are a lot of upcoming events where we could potentially do VBC get-togethers--

A fun get-together would be during Book Expo, which is in late May/early June in rotating locations. It’ll be in Los Angeles May 30 – June 1 next summer. I love, love, love Book Expo--lots of free galleys and plenty of other book-related swag (Scholastic gave away the most fabulous Captain Underpants beach-balls a few years ago--I thought the kids would swoon when it arrived in my loot-boxes).

The biggie event in the mystery world is Bouchercon, which is in Anchorage this September 27-30
http://www.bouchercon2007.com/ I’m just not sure I’m up to Anchorage, y’all. I have to wear a scarf and gloves if the temp. falls below 55.

(April 25-27, 2008 in Arlington, VA) This one looks pretty fun.

Left Coast Crime 2008 in Denver next March. http://www.leftcoastcrime.org/2008/
I don’t see Our Fearless Leader’s name on the list of attendees, but she may just not have registered yet.

I believe the Edgar Awards are in late April in NYC each year. That may be a good time for a VBC get-together.

Here are a few others:

Baltimore Book Festival 2007 9/28/2007 to 9/30/2007
Location : Baltimore Maryland USA

Murder and Mayhem in Muskego 2007 11/10/2007 to 11/10/2007
Location : Muskego Wisconsin USA

Thrillerfest 2007 7/12/2007 to 7/15/2007
Location : New York City New York USA
Hotel : The Grand Hyatt Manhattan
Genres: Mystery

Y'all may have some ideas about conventions or meetings focused on other genres, since much of LRK's fan-base crosses over into fantasy, SF and historical (and maybe others I don't know about).

For the VBC’s European branch, there is Dead on Deansgate, Europe’s biggest crime fiction festival. There is some information about it here:

For Canadian mystery lovers, there is Bloody Words VIII in Toronto next summer: http://www.bloodywords.com/BW-8.html

My availability is so tied to academic calendars that it's hard for me to get away during much of the year. But "Malice Domestic" is really close by, and I've made it a priority to get there in 2008! If it looks like it's going to work, I'll hope some other VBC'ers will be there :D .

Malice Domestic is definitely a possibility for me as are NY shows. Would we be so lucky as to have LRK with us at any of these?
