For those of us counting down the days until the HPVII release, here's a fun Russell/HP cross-over topic--
If Russell went to Hogwarts, in which house would the Sorting Hat place her? What about Holmes (and do you think the answer would be the same for LRK's Holmes and ACD's Holmes)?
How about any of your other favorite characters in the Canon (Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes books/stories) or Kanon (LRK's Russell series)?

Interesting topic indeed. I think Russell would fall under the Gryffindor house...she reminds me of Hermonie at times...dear lord did I just say that...
I don't think the answer for Holmes is that easy, especially the canon Holmes (my Holmes and the one I love dearly). I've always believed he was darker character, one who walked that fine line. He could easily fall into the Slythern, but his heart is good...most of the time...he's not a hufflepuff by all means...so it would be a toss up between Ravenclaw and Slythern, imho. The canon Holmes in Gryffindor would probably go mad...and end up wacking Ron with his walking cane...
LRK's Holmes...the more mellow man...well that's a toughie too...Ravenclaw or Gryffindor is my guess. He's not as dark and brooding as ACD's Holmes and seems more noble..entirely too noble at times...
I am subject to change...

I definitely agree, Russell and Hermione have much in common, she would be in Gryffindor; Holmes in Ravenclaw, Moriarity and daughter in Slytherin, Watson in Hufflepuff.

Holmes, Russell, and Moriarty - all Ravenclaw. Just because Moriarty went to the Dark Side doesn't make him Slytherin. Look at Dolores Umbridge: as nasty as can be and pure Hufflepuff. Mycroft: totally Ravenclaw.
Watson: Hufflepuff.
Veronica, Gryffindor; also the prophet in "Monstrous Regiment (Marjorie?) and the old Dartmoor squire.

I think Holmes would be one of those that the Sorting Hat had to think about for awhile, much like Harry himself, so much potential and thirst, but courage and nobility at the same time. I think it would come down to what the man himself actually thought of himself, like when Harry said, "Not Slytherin, anywhere but Slytherin"
Russell is Gryffindor if ever I saw one, but she would whack Ron or else chill him to the bone with a sound tongue lashing. (She would be a match for Prof. McGonagle though).
Watson is Hufflepuff. Watson could be the Fat Friar.
Moriarty could be Ravenclaw who went bad. His daughter would be Slytherin because she wanted nothing more than power and revenge.
Mycroft is another one who could be an either or. Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, both would serve him well, but given his chosen path, I would say Ravenclaw.
I love it when I can discuss two of my favorite books simultaneously. Many thanks to Vicki...........:)

Oh, happy day!
Russell I'd put in Gryffindor.
Kanon Holmes I'd put in Gryffindor, perhaps Ravenclaw.
Canon Holmes I'd put in Ravenclaw or Slytherin.
Mycroft? I'd put him in Ravenclaw.
I'll go through the books when I get back home to my beloved bookshelf!
I pretty much agree with everyone. I just don't see much ambition in a lot of the main characters.

I agree, o happy day!
And I think it's confirmed, Russell is totally Gryffindor.
For Holmes, I actually think Slytherin would be my choice. For some reason I feel he'd enjoy being like Snape, playing both sides of the fence.
It makes me giggle to think of Watson as a Hufflepuff.
Mrs. Hudson would be a squib, no?
And Mycroft, Ravenclaw.
Thanks for making me smile so much.

Russell--at the beginning of BEEK, I think the Sorting Hat would probably have put her in Ravenclaw because of her strong natural bent toward seeking knowledge and understanding for its own sake. But I think her association with Holmes awakens in her a need for action and adventure, and she ends up using her mental powers and knowledge-seeking skills as a means to support and facilitate that need, rather than the other way around. That would tip her into Gryffindor, I believe, although she has a strong enough scholarly bent to keep the Sorting Hat thinking on it for a while.
Dorothy Ruskin is the opposite of the post-Holmes Russell, I think, because her action/adventures tend to facilitate and play second fiddle to the quest for knowledge. That would put her in Ravenclaw, although she would probably do fine in Gryffindor, as well.
Kanon Holmes--Gryffindor
Canon Holmes--I'm not sure as I've read very little of the Canon, but based on reports and the tiny bit I've read, he sounds a bit like a Slytherin (albeit one of the nicer ones).
Moriarty's Daughter- Slytherin. She needs to get over herself.
Margery Childe - Slytherin (albeit one of the nicer ones), as she is hugely ambitious, but in a community/civic-oriented way.
Ali, Mahmoud and Iris would be Gryffindors.
Watson, Mrs. Hudson and Ronnie Beaconsfield seem like Hufflepuffs to me.

Yah--this might be a better choice for her. Maybe for Patrick, too. And I like Mycroft for Ravenclaw, also.

Some others I forgot...
Mycroft...Ravenclaw...hands down...
Oh yeah..Moriarty and his daughter...Slytherin..
Billy would be a squib!
Russell's aunt? Not sure about this one...she may be a squib too.

I believe that Russell's aunt would be a good friend of Aunt Petunia. :D

Okay...this may be unpopular, but Mycroft is a Slytherin.
It is important to remember that though dark wizards seem to come exclusively from Slytherin, it is not a "evil house." It is a house for people who seek information for the sake of power. It is often mentioned that it is a good thing that Mycroft is committed to good, because he is in a position to cause great harm. He is a character who never does go to the dark side, but has all the ability to do so and do so successfully. He knows all everyone's secrets and has his finger on all the strings.
Russell is definitely a Ravenclaw in love with a Griffendor who keeps yanking her out of her books and dragging her along into the action. Of course she goes, but it does sometimes take some prodding, a second telegram saying, "Bring maps. Put down books. Leave now." Without Holmes she would hardly ever leave the library.
And the aunt is definitely a squib.

I really think the aunt is a bilious muggle. To be a squib would necessitate even the slightest degree of understanding.
Mycroft as Slytherin makes some sense indeed. And I would be inclined to put Russell in Ravenclaw if it weren't for her bravery. Remember when Hermoine was asked why she wasn't in Ravenclaw, and she said the sorting hat did have a bit of trouble choosing? In the end it was her bravery which placed her in Godric Gryffindor's house, and I believe the same would be with Russell.
