I'm trying to figure out all of these pics. I think all of mine are too big so I'm trying to find a place so that if you want to see the pics you can go to the link I provide. I'll have it here shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience. -Meags

Lovely pictures! I particularly liked the rock formations, the heron and the various wildflowers - jewelweed, aster, goldenrod, etc. Thanks for sharing them with us. *off to google starved rock and figure out when I can go there . . .*

Oooo...you actually knew what kind of flowers those were? I took pictures of them to show my mom in hopes that she could tell me their names. I'll have to file those away so that I can impress her later. ;) Glad that you liked them. The rock formations were absolutely stunning. I would've taken a ton more pictures of them but my camera was running out of battery and there would've been no way of charging it the day before I as we decided to camp out and such. I really want to go back there again though. -Meags

Very nice photos, Meags! Starved Rock, and the closely adjacent Matthiessen State Park, are among my favorite hiking locales in northern Illinois. You have captured the area's allure very well. Thanks for sharing!

John.

I'll have to file those away so that I can impress her later. Blame it on my parents. In their retirement years, they have been hiking and started wildflower identification to make the hikes more interesting. Mom said the flowers hold still long enough to get identified, unlike birds. :D Anyway, when we hike with them we participate in the identifications and celebrate when we have a hike with a lot of different flowers - our record so far is 61! The orange-ish hanging down flower is jewelweed, or touch-me-not from the way the seed pods explode when touched, and comes in two varieties - pale which is yellow and spotted which is more orange with darker spots. The aster and goldenrod both come in a large and confusing variety and mostly we don't even bother to try to figure out the variety. You had one other flower which wasn't close enough to identify. Okay this post is probably far more than anyone ever wanted to read . . .

My sister loves wildflowers, hikes to see them, and has a beautiful wildflower garden in her backyard that is breathtaking in spring.

I've heard elsewhere that Matthiessen State Park is lovely. I thought I heard that it had some cool stuff geologically, which would be of great interest to me.

Don't worry about it. My mom has her own lovely garden and has transformed her backyard into "The Jungle" (as my dad and I have dubbed it) and she's got my sister into it as well. They go on and on about perennials, annuals, this vine and that vine, and whether they need to put this plant in more sun or less sun and such like that. I goes way over my head at times, especially with some of the names. I'm fortunate if I can name more than one type of lily, let alone both name and identify it. But it's fun to watch my mom and sister do it all. They're really quite good at it imo. -Meags

My sister and two other friends interprete an interest in their gardens as a request to be shown everything plant-by-plant.
