Holy cow, have y'all seen the latest puzzle? (http://www.laurierking.com/events/twenty-weeks-of-buzz/puzzles) I thought maybe the cypher from "Gloria Scott" but that didn't work, so I'm at a loss. Certainly not my forte. I hope some of you code-breakers do better than I have.

Yeah, it had me scratching my head. Maybe an anagram? But a cipher makes more sense given the context of Holmes & Russell.

Aw, c'mon, John! Give us a hint at least! I don't even know where to start and it's making me feel stupid, which I hate. *walking off grumbling and singing to myself, if I only had a brain . . .*

Ditto the "don't flog the messenger" sentiment....And props to the person with the time on their hands to work that all out.
Don't over-think it Karen- your brain is trying to make it harder than it is. :)

My brain is with Karen's. I've pondered this off and on all day today and nothing, absolutely nothing.

Weeeeell, I've been coming up with more and more complicated things. So maybe I do need to tone it down a bit. But MY GOD, MY BRAIN! Anyone want to give the slightest clue? Please?

My brain is pretty much burnt out from studying...it has like zero chance of coming up with a solution to this "puzzle" (which at this point doesn't even register as a puzzle to my beat up brain:rolleyes:).
I'll be curious to see what the answer ends up being...it's going to posted at some point, right?
Sara McClelland
02-12-2010, 10:20 PM
I hesitate to take pity and help out....it ruins the fun (and makes my chances of winning something far smaller!) but I do feel your pain. And take pity. And kind of want to help but I hate it when people tell me the answer to things like this instead of me working it out.
Life is full of tough decisions, to paraphrase (I think? Help, SC!) a Hazr brother....Justice Hall, to the darling children...don't have book to hand...it is something like that.

"Life is full of decisions," Alistair commented.
I was a bit disappointed that we weren't given an answer over on Mutterings today. I've given up on the puzzle, but did want to see the answer. Oh, well, life is also very busy for Laurie and crew these days, so it may take a few more days before my itch to know the answer is scratched. :(

Thanks, Official Reference Librarian SC! :D
I think it is really interesting how LRK and crew have devised such different kinds of puzzles for us to wrap our brains around. And it is interesting to me to see which ones fall into place easily...and which ones have me PMing John to find out answers! It's really good brain exercise....so thanks, whomever created and will create the puzzles. Good times.

I didn't come up with the information this time, Sara, Pat did.
I will say there is a hint on today's Mutterings, and on Laurie's Facebook it said there were only FOUR entries. It is comforting to know I'm not a blithering idiot for not being able to get this one, but even with the clues, I CAN"T GET THIS ONE!:confused::confused::confused:

My problem is I think I know the answer but haven't a clue how to justify it with this verse. I even had my DH look at it and he is a wiz at these types of things. His first reaction was the answer I thought, but he too could not justify it with what was on the page. GRRRRRRR. Well, this truly isn't my forte, but I did think DH could crack it.

John, you are a terrible person! (but we knew that ;)). I managed to make the first sentence one name and then some words: all wrong! (*thwap* to self as taught by Our Vicki).
O well. I had wondered if I'd get points for creativity. Figured prob not. //Meredith

Thanks Millie.
And John, you bad man , you! Thanks! :D:D:D
I know that this was a different kind of puzzle and that not everyone's brains work in that way of 'seeing' anagrams (as was John's hidden word puzzle). I thought it was a nice change. And with Russell, I thought that "sly arm rules" was a good (although broad) hint considering her knife throwing prowess!
Perhaps if there is another puzzle, it will be more to everyone's liking. I want as many people as possible to have a chance at the lovely prizes after all.

Oh Marjorie, it was merely frustrating in the most delicious sense of the word. Like many, I got to see how elaborate my brain could get when attempting to solve puzzles! Bravo and hats off to you!

Perhaps if there is another puzzle, it will be more to everyone's liking.I think it is really great that there are so many different ways to win something - puzzles, artistry, writing. It gives a diverse group of people chances to win with something they are good at. So it's all good, Marjorie!

I knew it was some sort of scramble, but somehow I thought it was the words, not the letters. So I kept trying to rearrange the WORDS to make some kind of sense! I laughed at myself when I realized what was intended.:o:D

Lenore, it could have been that with rearranging words! I thought my little hint was that it was written on five separate lines and there were the five honeybee images and that was trying to point you in the direction of five solutions! (The one bee on top of the poem could be taken as the god of the hive! The other four...the drones? The workers? Who can say? :p)

I kept over-thinking and couldn't unscramble when I finally hit on the method. Not my forte, obviously!! :D It was a great puzzle, though, and those who conquered it should be almost as proud as the creator of it. Bravo to everyone!

It was very very subtle! I had no idea what anyone would make of the word part of the puzzle and the anagrams. I didn't want it to be too easy. Apparently, I succeeded at that! LOL.

Marjorie-
My sister has a book that I think you'd enjoy. It's called "Maze". And basically, each page is a different "room" in a "house". In each room there are several passageways, and the room is filled with things that supposedly tell which hallway one should take. Somethings have significance, some things don't. I got through one completely one guesswork (Holmes would kill me)! But it is a very wonderful challenge, and something that a great deal of people (especially the puzzle mistress and solvers!) would enjoy. Now see if that doesn't twist your brains!

Thanks, Liz. That sounds really interesting and fun and brain stretching. I will have to look for the book once my 'to be read' pile gets a little shorter. I am expecting the new books from Dana Stabenow and Karen E. Olson to arrive any minute now and I am reading Rhys Bowen's first series set in Wales. So many books, so little....you know!
Thanks,
Marjorie
Good morning. I'm trying my hand at the crossword puzzle for this week. How do I either (1) download the puzzle so I can fill it in from my laptop, or (2) submit the puzzle once I've filled out all the squares? Many thanks, Agee.
