That's LA as in Louisiana (Lake Charles), not that *other* place!
My name's Sherrie, and I've been a Holmes fan for as long as I can remember, and a fan of LRK since BEEK came out. I've been around here for a short while, but since I work at a college and we've been in the middle of Fall registration, I have not had much time for posting so far. Especially about myself, when there are so many fascinating discussions to join! Now that things in RL have calmed down, I'll probably be making a pest of myself. ;)

I know you've been around the VBC for awhile, Sherrie, but welcome again, and of course, no one is ever a pest around here:) I'm jealous that RL has given you a temporary break, but glad that you are spending it here!!;)
John.

Hi over here, Sherrie! <Waves> Fall registration comes early these days, doesn't it? I'm glad it's over so you can hang with us.
I have some cousins near you--some in Beaumont and Port Arthur, TX and others in Baton Rouge, which is still having big growing pains, trying to deal with the New Orleans influx. Did y'all have a big influx of Katrina survivors also? But then Rita hit y'all just afterward, didn't it? That was one heck of a year for hurricanes.

We did take in quite a few refugees from Katrina, only to have to evacuate them as well as ourselves just a few weeks later. It was an interesting time, and although my family was blessed to come through with minor damage, some places along the coast were so devastated they may never recover.
Events like those tend to put life into perspective, you know?

I'm glad your family escaped relatively unscathed, Sherrie!
I've talked to some people who have been to New Orleans and other Gulf Coast towns recently, and I also wonder if they'll ever come back. In the case of the lower parts of New Orleans, I think a good case could be made that they shouldn't come back. It's a great risk to build so far below the water-line, at least without the creation of a much more advanced levee system. And that's evidently not going to happen in the foreseeable future. It's a very sad situation.
BTW, you might enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris--she calls them "Southern Vampire Mysteries." They're set in rural LA, near Shreveport. The series addresses how Katrina has affected the Gulf Coast vampires, which is interesting.
